The Trial

B. J. Carper

She stood alone.
There was no one to turn to and no place to run.
The jury was inside herself,
and only she alone could determine the verdict.
They crowded around, stealing her space,
crowding in on her,
pulling her in so many directions.

She debated the options.
What would the sentencing entail?
Would it be life or just years?
Would it be a burden of pain and suffering,
could it only be tolerable,
or maybe,
just maybe be the unforeseen blessing.

The crowds cheered, they mocked,
they demanded the answer.
The answer was not there.
And she being the judge determined it a hung jury.
To never be tried again.

Thus not guilty, but always looked upon as so.
