My life closed twice before its close
Emily Dickinson
My life closed twice, before it closed -
It yet remains to see
If Immortality unveil
A third event to me
So huge, so hopeless to conceive
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell.
Closure, partition, separation - all are kinds of death. After the final death, the departure is all we know of those headed for heaven; parting itself is so painful that no other news of hell is needed to make it hellish.
