Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson spent most of his long life in Massachusetts, where he was born. He was a schoolmaster and Unitarian pastor but from about the age thirty earned his living as an essayist and lecturer. Although his poetry is respected, his fame rests much more on his peculiarly American labors as a thinker. It is to his credit that he was among the first to recognize the genius of Whitman.
