A carved wooden statue of an Indian, used as a cigar and tobacco store advertisement, because the Indian was the originator of the use of tobacco. Small wooden Indians were used in England as early as 1600. A century later large life sized wooden Indians appeared in front of the tobacco shops in the colonies.
