Tomochichi

A Creek chief noted in the early history of Georgia.  For some reason he was outlawed by his people, and with a few followers settled on the spot where Savannah, Georgia, now stands.  At the time of the founding of the Georgia Colony in 1733, he became friendly wit the whites and helped bring about a treaty of alliance with the colonists and the Lower Creek Indians.  At the same time his differences with his own tribe were settled.

The following year Tomochichi accompanied James Edward Oglethorpe, founder of the colony, to England.  He was entertained, given many presents, and his portrait was painted.  He remained a friend of the colonists until his death in 1739.  He was given a public funeral at Savannah, where a monument to his memory was erected in 1899 by the Colonial Dames of America.
