Riddle, Toby

A Modoc Indian woman, known to her tribe as Winema, or "Woman Chief."  At fifteen she gained her Indian name by rallying Modoc warriors after they had been attacked by enemies.

Winema married Frank Riddle, a miner from Kentucky, who later became an interpreter.  She was with her tribe when troops sought to round it up during the Modoc War.  She saved the life of Commissioner A. B. Meacham, when he and others were attacked while trying to bring about peace.  Congress later voted Toby Riddle a pension and she and her husband and child moved east with Meacham.
