A noted Wyandot chief who was known by the French as Monsieur Crue (Crane) and by the English as Crane - both being translations of his Indian name. Tarhe fought under Chief Cornstalk at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1774 and was one of the thirteen chiefs who participated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 when the Indian allies met a disastrous defeat at the hands of General Anthony Wayne.
After this battle Tarhe sided with the Americans, and although seventy years old, led his warriors through the whole of General William Henry Harrison's campaign in the War of 1812. He was present when Tecumseh was slain at the Battle of the Thames.
Until his death at Cranetown, Ohio, in 1816, he was a friend of the Americans, and as chief priest of his tribe was keeper of the calumet which bound the tribes north of the Ohio River in a confederation for mutual benefit and protection. A mourning council at which the celebrated Red Jacket was present, was held after his death.
