Tanoan Pueblos

Twelve pueblos or villages of the Pueblo Indians, the most famous of which are Taos, Isleta, San Ildefonso, and San Juan.  Taos, fifty two miles northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico, was first visited by the Spaniards in 1540.  It was later the home of Kit Carson.  Isleta, twelve miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico, also was discovered in 1540 and is said to stand today on the original site.  San Ildefonso, eighteen miles northwest of Santa Fe, was the seat of a Spanish mission in 1617.  San Juan, twenty five miles northwest of Santa Fe, was the headquarters of the Spanish provisional government in 1598.

Other pueblos are Hano, Jemez, Nambe, Pojoque, Picuris, Sandia, Santa Clara, and Tesuque, all in New Mexico.
