Military leader of the Pilgrims in their fights with the Indians. Miles Standish, a native of Lancashire, England, had previously served with the British army in the Netherlands. He sailed with the Mayflower colony to Massachusetts in 1620, but five years later, the colony being in distress, he was sent back to England. He returned the following year, and later settled at Duxbury, Massachusetts, serving as magistrate for life.
