An English explorer and adventurer, who in 1605 joined a London Company expedition to colonize Virginia. he was captured by Powhatan and his life allegedly was saved by Pocahontas.
Captain Smith was elected president of the colony in 1608, but returned to England the following year. Two years later he was back in Virginia and remained there for seven years.
