Samoset

A Pemaquid Indian sagamore who was the first to greet the Pilgrims when they landed on Cape Cod in 1620.  He is reported to have exclaimed in English, "Welcome, Englishmen!"  Samoset, who had learned English from some fishermen he had met previously, introduced the Pilgrims to Massasoit.

In 1625 Samoset helped execute the first deed made between the Indians and the English, conveying 12,00 acres of Pemaquid territory to John Brown of New Harbor, Maine.  Shortly before his death, he signed another deed in 1653, turning over 1,000 acres to Englishmen.
