A short riding whip about fifteen inches long, with a wood, bone, or horn handle, a wrist strap at one end and at the other end a double lash of rawhide from twenty to twenty four inches long. The quirt of the mounted Indian had a hole burned through the handle about two inches from the lash end and a rawhide lash passed through the hole. Both ends of the lash were brought down to the butt of the handle where each end passed through a slit in the other. This secured the lash to the handle. One or two inches from the butt end another hole was burned, through which a wrist strap was passed.
