Prayer Sticks

Sacred sticks, called pahos, decorated with feathers used by the Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache Indians in ceremonies.  These sticks usually were painted in various colors and most were about the length of the hand with the fingers extended.  To some, small bags of meal or pollen were attached as offerings to the gods.

Prayer sticks were made with great care and all discarded parts in the making, such as chips of wood, ends of cord, and bits  of feathers, were destroyed.  The sticks were used in trying to gain the good will of the Indian gods.
