A small tribe of Algonquian Indians who lived on the Podunk River in Connecticut. Their principal village, at the mouth of the river, was called Podunk. They joined the hostile Indians in King Philip's War and never returned. The name has been applied ironically by American writers and others to an imaginary small town - a typically dull, placid, and unprogressive community.
