Pilgrims

English colonists who in 1620 settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  The first group of 102 men, women, and children came over on the  Mayflower, and having lost their course at sea, landed on Cape Cod instead of that section of Virginia to which a grant had been given them by King James I of England.  They were met by an English speaking Indian, Samoset.

Many years ago, Rufus Choate, a lawyer famous for his wit and after dinner speeches, remarked that the Pilgrims upon reaching America, "First fell on their knees and then on the aborigines."
