Pequot

An Algonquian tribe, believed to have been an eastern division of the Mohegan, who lived in what is today the state of Connecticut.  They were the most dreaded of the southern New England Indians until their recent defeat by the English.

The Pequot War began in 1637 after these Indians had killed a white trader and committed several other hostile acts.  The colonists killed some 600 Indian men, women, and children, and captured others who were sold into slavery.  The remainder were distributed among other tribes under the authority of the Mohegan chief, Uncas, and forbidden to ever call themselves Pequot.

Today there are believed to be a few Pequot-Moheagan living in the vicinity of Norwich, Connecticut.  The name of this tribe exists only as that of two small villages, one in Minnesota and one in Connecticut.
