Pecos

A tribe of Indians who occupied the largest and most populous of the pueblos of New Mexico in historic times, situated on the upper branch of the Pecos River, thirty miles southeast of Santa Fè.  At the time of Coronado's visit in 1540 the population was estimated as more than 2,000.  Raids by the Apache and Comanche resulted in the death of practically all the inhabitants, and in 1838 the last seventeen fled to the Jemez Pueblo, where their survivors still live.  Their name has been preserved in the Pecos River, largest branch of the Rio Grande; a county and town in Texas; and a town in New Mexico near the ruins of the ancient pueblo.
