Mugwump

An Algonquian Indian word meaning "big man" or "chief."  Today it is used in politics to mean an independent voter or one who "straddles the fence" in politics.  It was first used in this sense in 1884 when a group of Republicans left their party in a national election.  They were charged with thinking themselves superior to their party, hence "big men" or "mugwumps."
