Missouri

A tribe of Sioun Indians who roamed the Missouri River area near the mouth of the Grand River.  Warfare and disease nearly wiped them out.  Today a few remaining are classified as Oto and live on what the Government calls the Otoe Reservation in Oklahoma.  The name Missouri means "People Having Dugout Canoes."  As the Missouri River was sometimes called "The Big Muddy," it was believed for a long time that this was the meaning of the word.  The state of Missouri also is named for this tribe.
