A Huron (Wyandot) chief of the Sandusky tribe of Ohio, who was sentenced to death by Tecumseh because of his friendship for the whites. Leatherlips, whose Indian name was Shateiaronhi (Two Clouds of Equal Size), had aroused the jealousy of Tecumseh, because of his honorable character and loyalty to the Americans.
Tecumseh termed him a wizard and sent Leatherlips' own brother to him with a piece of bark on which had been drawn a tomahawk as the token of his death sentence. Another Huron chief, Roundhead, was ordered to carry out the execution.
The execution took place on the Scioto River near Columbus, Ohio, in the summer of 1810. A number of white men, including a justice of the peace, made an effort to save the friendly chief, but without success. Leatherlips was tomahawked as he knelt beside his open grave, chanting his death song.
In 1888 the Wyandot Club of Columbus, Ohio, erected a granite monument to the memory of Leatherlips in a park surrounded by a stone wall, encompassing the spot where he died.
