Klamath

A tribe in southwest Oregon closely connected with the Modoc.  The Klamath were called "People of the Lakes," because their principal villages were on Upper Klamath lake.  They were a hardy people and unlike their kinsmen, the Modoc, always lived in peace with the white people.  They took no part in the fierce Modoc War of 1872-1873.  It is said their contemptuous treatment of the Modoc was the main cause of the latter's leaving the Klamath Reservation and returning to their former stamping grounds along the California boundary, which brought on the troubles with the whites.
