A small orphan group of Apache who became friends of the Kiowa at an early period. The popular name for them was the Prairie Apache. While they lived with the Kiowa and fought with them, they still clung to their original language and customs.
It was less than a century ago that these people learned of their kinship to the Apache. The Kiowa gave them the name of "Thieves," but this could have been a praiseworthy one, for in the old days a smart thief was a highly respected Indian.
