A warlike tribe that formerly ranged the area around the upper Arkansas and Canadian rivers in Colorado and Oklahoma. Associated with the Comanche and the Shoshoni, members of all three tribes were sometimes called Snakes. The Kiowa joined the Comanche, Kiowa Apache, and Cheyenne in the general outbreak in 1874 and 1875.
The Kiowa, dark skinned and heavy set, were horse Indians and buffalo hunters. One of their claims to fame is the fact that they are believed to have killed more white people in proportion to their numbers than any other tribe.
Today they are on the Kiowa Reservation in Oklahoma with the Kiowa Apache and the Comanche. The name Kiowa has been given to counties in Colorado and Kansas; to a stream in Colorado; and to places in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
