Indian Wars

The War Department has made up the following official list of Indian Wars in the United States.

1790-1795  War with the Northwest tribes: Mingo, Miami, Wyandot, Delaware, Potawatomi, Shawnee, Chippewa, and Ottawa, which included Harmar's and St. Clairs' bloody defeats, and Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers, which brought peace.

1811-1813  War with the Northwest tribes, which included General Harrison's victory at Tippecanoe, Indiana, and later the defeat of Tecumseh's forces at the Battle of the Thames in Canada, when the great Shawnee chief was killed.

1812  The Florida or Seminole War when Spanish Florida was invaded by the Georgia Militia under General Newman, and the Seminole under King Wayne were defeated.

1813  Peoria Indian war in Illinois.

1813-1814  Creek War in Alabama when General Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Indians in a series of bloody battles.

1817-1818  Seminole War in Georgia and Florida when General Jackson took possession of the Spanish territory, and brought the Indians to terms.

1823  Campaign against the Blackfoot and Arikara Indians on the Upper Missouri River

1827  Winnebago expedition, or La Fevre Indian War, in Wisconsin.

1831  Sauk and Fox Indian War in Illinois.

1832  The Black Hawk War, which ended in the surrender of Chief Black hawk at Prairie du Chien.

1834  Pawnee expedition in Indian Territory.

1835-1842  The Toledo War, or Ohio Michigan boundary dispute.

1835-1842 The Seminole War in Florida.  Osceola defeated.

1835-1837  Creek uprising in Alabama.

1836-1838  Cherokee disturbances which ended in the removal of the Cherokee Indians to Indian Territory.

1836  Indian troubles on the Missouri and Iowa line.

1837  Osage Indian disturbance in Missouri

1849-1863  Navajo disturbances in New Mexico.  Kit Carson rounded up 8,000 Navajos and held them prisoner.

1849-1861  More than ten years of continuous troubles with the Comanche, Cheyenne, Lipan, and Kickapoo Indians in Texas.

1850  The Pitt River expedition in California.

1851-1853  Utah Indian disturbances.

1855  Expedition against the Snake Indians in Oregon.

1855-1856  Sioux expedition in Nebraska Territory.

1855  The Yakima expedition which failed, but the following year the Indian allies were defeated and peace was made.

1855-1856  Cheyenne and Arapaho troubles

1855-1858  Seminole War in Florida

1857  Sioux Indian disturbances in Minnesota and Iowa.

1858  Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and Palouse Indian disturbances.

1858  Navajo expedition in New Mexico.

1858-1859  Wichita expedition in Indian Territory.

1859  Colorado River expedition in California

1859  Pecos expedition in Texas.

1860  Kiowa and Comanche expedition in Indian Territory.

1860-1861  Navajo expedition in New Mexico.

1862-1867  The Sioux War in Minnesota led by Chief Little Crow, which ended in the defeat of the Indians and the removal of the Minnesota Sioux to Dakota.

1863-1869  War against the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, and Comanche Indians in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Indian Territory.

1865-1868  Indian wars in southern Oregon and Idaho and northern California and Nevada

1867-1881  Campaigns against the Lipan, Kiowa, Kickapoo, and Comanche Indians, and troubles along the Mexican border.

1874-1875  Campaigns against the Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Comanche Indians in Indian Territory.

1874  Sioux expedition in Wyoming and Nebraska.

1875  Expedition against the Indians of eastern Nevada

1876-1879  War with the Northern Cheyenne and Sioux in Indian Territory, Kansas, Wyoming, Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana.

1877  The Nez Percè campaign in which Chief Joseph was defeated.

1878  The Bannock and Paiute campaign.

1878  The Ute expedition in Colorado.

1878-1887  Apache wars in which Chiefs Victorio and Geronimo led their warriors.

1879  The Snake or Sheepeater troubles in Idaho.

1890  Sioux Ghost Dance troubles and the death of Sitting Bull.  Also the Battle of Wounded Knee.

1913 The Navajo War in New Mexico.

1915  The Paiute War in Colorado.
