Former territory of the United States, originally part of the Louisiana Purchase. It was set aside by Congress in 1829, to be used by Indians who were to be transferred from east of the Mississippi River to the West. The Five Civilized Tribes first occupied it. In 1890 the area was cut down one half by the creation of Oklahoma Territory. In 1907 both Indian and Oklahoma territories became the state of Oklahoma.
