A term applied to both white men and Indians who acted as guides or scouts for army troops and for pioneers.
The most famous of the Indian army scouts were the Pawnee. This tribe boasted it had never been at war with the white man. Pawnee scouts wore uniforms on parade but when they went into battle they discarded practically all their clothing. These scouts gained many honors for their work with the United States Army during the Indian wars between 1865 and 1885. Major Frank North was leader for the Pawnee Scouts.
Among the white scouts the most famous included Buffalo Bill Cody, Kit Carson, Frank Grouard, and Jim Bridger.
