The Bureau of Indian Affairs operates over 350 Federal schools in the United States and Alaska, with a total enrollment of over 50,000 Indian children. Of these, 265 are day schools ranging in size from one room rural schools to consolidated elementary and high schools enrolling up to 1000 children. Sixteen others are non reservation schools, and sixty nine are reservation boarding schools. In eleven localities dormitory care is provided for children enrolled in local public schools.
The Bureau does not operate colleges for Indians. The graduates of Federal high schools who wish to go to college are encouraged to enroll in state and private colleges. The Bureau operates a scholarship program, as do many private and tribal organizations, to aid Indian students to gain higher education. The Indian Reorganization Act also provides a scholarship fund from which Indians can borrow for college or special training.
