A chief of the
Oglala Sioux Indians say his name was misunderstood by the whites and should
have been translated as "His-Horse-Is-Crazy." He is supposed
to have gotten this name because a wild horse dashed through the village when
he was born.
Crazy Horse joined Sitting Bull when the Dakota went on the warpath in 1875 to resist white gold miners who had flocked into the Black Hills. He also led his men in the Custer battle in 1876.
Pursued later by the U. S. Cavalry, he finally surrendered with 2,000 followers in the spring of 1877. He was accused of trying to stir up another war and was imprisoned. On September 7, 1877, he tried to escape and was killed.
