The prairie wolf, sometimes
called the "barking wolf," because its bark resembles that of a
dog. The Indian considered the coyote a wise animal and respected it.
Coyote skin was valued by many Plains tribes for making quivers. Few
tribes ate the flesh of the coyote, although the Coyoteros, a division of the
Apache, are believed by some to have given that name because they ate the
flesh of the coyote.
