A warm southwest wind which usually comes in winter and suddenly melts the snow. There are three types of chinook winds: a wet chinook, a dry chinook, and a chinook which is in-between. The term is said to have first been given to a wind which blew over the Chinook Indian camp toward the trading post established by the Hudson's Bay Company at Astorua, Oregon.
